On your first day of your safari, meet with your driver after breakfast at your preferred place of pick up, get a briefing about your whole trip, and drive to Akagera National park. The drive time from Kigali to the park is about 2 hours of which the last 45 minutes is mainly done on dirt but paved road.
Registering is done at the park’s entrance and it where you are assigned a park guide to take you around the park. You will be able to spot wildlife like the zebras which feed around the parks’ main entrance and headquarters, water bucks, Topi, Buffaloes, impalas plus Giraffes will be spotted. After the game drive, you are driven back to your lodge for lunch and after you go for a 2 hour boat ride on Lake Ihema in Akagera National Park.
The following day is a full day game drive in the northern section. Early breakfast, with packed lunch, bottled water, drive northern section of the park via the Mutumba hill for great wildlife overlooking Tanzania. The section is a great wildlife spotting section which has both Savannah woodland and open Savannah grasslands.
The next day you prepare and transfer to for a 4 hours’ drive from Akagera National Park crossing through Kigali city to Volcanoes National Park the home of the Mountain gorillas in Rwanda.
After early morning breakfast, you are driven to Volcanoes National Park in Kinigi Headquarters at around 7:45 am, get coffee and a performance by a group with drums and an enthusiastic attitude for musical beat. After the small entertainment, you meet up with your guide for a short briefing about mountain gorilla rules and the forest. After walk to the start of the trek and enter into the forest to look for the last remaining gorillas, tracking is a maximum 1 hour and only 8 clients are allowed to trek a gorilla family. The cost of a gorilla permit cost 75 USD. This is a policy which is understandable and reasonable. Make sure you just don’t look at the gorillas through a lens too much though as 1 hour can go quick but take photography for you memorable lifetime experience.
In the evening you can visit the Iby’wacu culture for a great performance such as Kinyarwanda traditional marriage, the medicine man, the black smith and the local food grinding on a carved stone.
