Home/Gorilla Safaris/Budget Primates Safaris in Congo

Besides the known instabilities that happened in the ancient years in DR.Congo, the country have rejuvenated its wildlife including the primates in a way of conserving the natural resources and also curbing out poaching of primates by the natives in the national park and also practicing community development programs and sensitization. In this process, DR.Congo has got numerous primates including the endangered mountain gorillas, Rembrandt’s monkeys and the endangered chimps are a great source of tourist attraction.

To witness this, we planned a budget gorilla safari with nature adventure Africa whereby we had to track both the chimps and the gorillas plus the rare most endangered Rembrandt’s monkey in Congo. The chimp permit is at $100 and a gorilla tracking permit at $400 USD per person but this was cheep to us to the extent that though we were on a budget safari, this was our stake.

Here we had to camp but we lacked camping equipments though Moses advised us that where we were to sleep all the equipments are there on the same amount we had paid for accommodation. For a quick safari, we traveled through Rwanda

where we were picked from Kigali international airport and we were taken to Kibumba tented Camp via Goma.

Since we were four, we applied for a double occupancy tented room at $200 per room per two people, good enough these prices included break first, lunch, dinner and 16% government tax; this was our base for our early wake up for gorilla tracking in Virunga Mountains. This blended our tour due to what we experienced at night when the sky was turning yellowish due to the boiling magma in the crater on top of Nyiragongo Mountain near our camp base as we were enjoying beers from the bar as my other colleagues were taking a hot bath.

The following day in the morning we went for gorilla tracking and our kicking point was at Bukima patrol post, we were provided with the rangers who guided deep in the forest. It never took us much time in the track due to the fact that gorillas had spent their previous night just near, but before nearing the gorillas, we were told to put on our masks for emergence purposes. As we came closer to the gorillas, we observed the giant but calm silver back gorillas as it was surrounding its family and the females were busy playing with their babies.

This amused us including the gorilla structure and the way some times they stood on two feet peeping us around their territories but the time we spent with them was only 1hour though we were still enjoying watching but we took some snaps shoots. In the afternoon we went back to our camping for lunch and also for refreshments as we were waiting for our next day chimpanzee tracking in Tongo forest though they are somehow limited, as we were tracking, by coincidence we landed to the newest monkeys adding on the available primates.

These despite of the gender they had a short white beard and the older one had developed some baldness. The ears were large and the nostrils were somehow small. Chimpanzees have heavy eyebrows, a flattened fore-head, large protruding ears and a short neck with a palm similar to that of a human being. We took photos as some chimps were begging for the water bottles we had but in the afternoon our time had gotten over and we went back to the camp as we were waiting for the next day’s departure back to Kigali for our flight.
