Welcome to Virunga National Park that borders Virunga Mountains in the South, Rwenzori Mountains in the North and in the eastern parts of Congo it borders Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Queen Elizabeth National Park and Rwenzori Mountains National Park both in Uganda thus it will be simple for you to access those Parks too if you wish to go there.
Virunga National Park was gazetted in 1925 basically to conserve the wildlife and bird life however the most attractive creature in the Park which brings many tourists to explore the Park are the rare endangered Mountain gorillas.
Democratic Republic of Congo is one of the three lucky countries which inhabit these rare endangered Mountain gorillas and a gorilla permit is the cheapest compared to those of Rwanda which costs US$ 1500 and Uganda which costs US$ 600.
A gorilla permit costs US$ 400 however during the low seasons of April to May and mid October to mid November a gorilla permit will be given out on a discount of 50% where you will have to pay US$ 200.
In this park before going for the gorilla trekking tours you will be first briefed at the park’s head offices where you will be given out the instructions and rules you should follow such as; ensure that you are above 15 years of age and in a fine condition, stay with the gorillas for only one hour, view the gorillas from a distance of at least 8 meters, do not smoke or eat from the Park, do not litter in the Park and you will be allowed 8 individuals per each tracking group plus many others which will be told to you at the head offices of the Park.
The park consists of not only luxury lodges but also relaxed lodges such Mikeno lodge, Tchegera Island Tented Camp, Bukima Tented Camp, Lulimbi Tented Camp, Nyiragongo Volcano Summit Shelters and so on.
Virunga national park protects other animals such as Okapi, giraffes, buffaloes, forest elephants, low land gorillas as well as chimpanzees. This makes it one of the best destinations for one to enjoy the world’s nature.
Nyiragongo Mountain hiking is another interesting activity you can enjoy most while in Virunga National Park meanwhile it is a two days hike.
It is a 7 hours hike however it is very rare for any of the hiking group to make it to the summit on their first day instead you will first camp somewhere on the Mountain and you access the summit in the following day and then descend back on that very day after enjoying the hike.
The Nyiragongo Mountain consists of Nyiragongo volcano summit shelters which are used by the hikers for living and from this camp is the only place in Congo where you will get the all view of Congo and the all surrounding of Virunga national park.
After all the activities in Virunga National Park, you can go for a holiday to Lake Kivu which is too close to Virunga National Park and the Lake borders Rwanda on the other hand. From the Lake you will get many exciting views which will impress your eyes and also engage in many leisure activities thus refreshing your minds from the tiresome activities you performed in Virunga National Park.
You will have a sight to the world’s tenth Island known as ‘’IDJWI’’ which is situated on Lake Kivu plus knowing how to extract methane which is always extracted from there. Still at the Lake you will get to the fish species caught from the Lake including cat fish and Nile tilapia plus getting involved in the luxury boat drives on the Lake where you will get chances of viewing hippos and crocodiles.
You will really enjoy your tour to Virunga National Park if at all you don’t only end your visitation in just seeing the Mountain gorillas and other animals and instead hike the Nyiragongo Mountain and also go for a holiday to Lake Kivu.
