Gorilla photography in Congo, the vegetation in Virunga National Park is more like the one of Bwindi forest.
It is thick and dark forest, the only problem Congo have been having civil wars for many years which affected Congo tourism. Congo is now safe and you can easily book gorilla trekking tour, in Virunga.
Remember to bring your camera standard point and also you need to make sure that the cameras are fully charged. Remember to come with extra memory cards just in case.
Also remember that while gorilla filming and photographing flash is not allowed when taking photos. Professional photographers may need more than one camera since it’s had to change lens while the gorillas are moving in the forest.
The professional film crews and photographers also require permission and need to buy filming permits in advance from the tour operator or directly from Virunga National Park in Congo.
Remember Always to keep the camera or the phone in a waterproof bag since it can rain anytime in the impenetrable forest.
At the Park Headquarters, you will be briefed about gorilla tracking dos and don’ts before setting off into the forest to track gorillas in Parc National des Virunga of Congo for the incredible experience.
In the course of searching for the Mountain Gorillas, you will be exposed to excellent birding and primates such as the Golden Monkeys, Blue Monkeys, Black and White colobus monkey, and giant forest hogs among others.
You will stay with these beautiful primates for one hour for observation and photography.
Gorilla tracking through the forest, hills and swamps can be tough, arduous and tiring, sometimes taking up to 8 hours in the forest. But coming face to face with the great primates is well worth the effort.
The Mountain Gorillas are located in the Mikeno Sector, about a two and half our drive from Goma. They can also be approached from Bunagana (border of Uganda).
The permit is $400, so slightly cheaper than in Uganda or Rwanda. The visits are also a bit more authentic and in smaller groups.
Treks usually require 1-2 hours of hiking in each direction, depending where the mountain gorillas spent the previous night and the difficulty of the terrain.
To safeguard the health of Virunga’s gorillas, visitors will be required to wear surgical masks (provided) when in the presence of gorillas. Time with the gorillas is strictly limited to one hour.
